Optimization is a branch of mathematics devoted to provide mathematical procedures (algorithms) to optimally solve complex problems, involving a huge amount of variables and constraints.
In our two countries, Portugal and Spain, Optimization has attained a high level of maturity, as it became an academic subject in the curricula of most of our sciences faculties and engineering schools. Doctoral programs and masters degrees are offered by universities of our two countries, and many research papers (co)authored by Iberian scientists are published in the most prestigious international journals each year.
Although the advances of Optimization in our two countries are remarkable, the co-operation between researchers of both sides has been quite limited. This the reason why the Iberian Conference in Optimization constitutes a historical opportunity for reinforcing the pre-existing links between the specialists in Optimization from both countries.
