Our colleague and Professor of Mathematics at the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon, Vice-President of the CIM during 2000-2004 and member of its Scientific Committee since 2005, has passed away after a long and courageous fight with a fatal illness. His last collaboration with CIM activities was the co-organization with the Colloquium “The Legacy of Claude Shannon”<http://www.cim.pt/agenda/event/174>, held at his school the 13 December 2016.
